Buy Asia Miles: The Complete
2026 Guide

✍ AirMilesHK.com Team📅 Updated August 2026⏱ 8 min read

Asia Miles average 1.2–1.3 cents in redemption value — but the right business class award returns 4 to 6 cents per mile. Buying at 1.75 cents only makes sense if you know which side of that gap you are on. Here is the full picture.

Asia Miles is Cathay Pacific's currency, and since Cathay folded Marco Polo Club into a single programme it is the only one: Cathay tiers for status, Asia Miles for spending. Wherever you are based, if you fly Cathay or oneworld through Asia, this is the programme your travel runs on.

Buying miles instead of earning them is the fast route — but only when the redemption justifies it. This guide covers what the miles cost, what they return, and the two traps (surcharges and expiry) that catch people.

What buying Asia Miles costs

Through us, Asia Miles start at 1.75 cents per mile, with volume tiers below that for larger orders. Miles go directly into your own Asia Miles account, typically within 24–72 hours, and you book your own award — the account, the booking and the ticket are all yours.

Against that, independent 2026 valuations put Asia Miles at 1.2–1.3 cents each on average. Read that carefully: at the average, buying at 1.75 cents loses money. Buying only works when you target the top of the chart — which is exactly what the next section is for.

Where Asia Miles return 4–6 cents per mile

Asia Miles price on distance-based charts — one for Cathay's own flights, one for oneworld partners, one for multi-carrier itineraries. Distance charts create sweet spots:

  • Cathay long-haul business class. Hong Kong to London or Paris in business, where cash fares routinely clear $4,000 one way. This is the marquee redemption and the reason most people buy.
  • Cathay First on the 777. Cathay releases first class award space to its own members ahead of partners — Asia Miles balances get seats Alaska and Avios holders never see.
  • US West Coast to Hong Kong business at 70,000–85,000 miles one way against $3,500–4,500 cash — roughly 5 cents per mile.
  • Oneworld multi-carrier awards. Four or more oneworld airlines strung into one itinerary on a fixed chart — the closest thing left to a round-the-world award at sane pricing.
  • JAL business class to Tokyo — comparable value to Cathay's own metal and often easier award space.

The weak uses: short-haul economy (~1.5 cents), and the Cathay Shop catalogue (as low as 0.5 cents). If that is the plan, do not buy miles — pay cash for the flight.

The fuel surcharge trap

Cathay levies carrier surcharges on its own award flights, and they rose again on long-haul routes in 2026. A "free" business class award to London can carry hundreds of dollars in surcharges and taxes on top of the miles.

The partial fix: partner awards. Redemptions on carriers like Qantas or American through Asia Miles can carry materially lower surcharges. When we price an award for a customer, we quote the all-in figure — miles cost plus taxes and surcharges — because that is the only number that means anything.

The 18-month expiry rule

Asia Miles expire 18 months after your last earning or redemption activity. Any activity resets the clock for your entire balance — a card transfer, a redemption, even donating 100 miles to Cathay's carbon offset programme, which takes two minutes and protects everything.

One legacy catch: miles earned before January 2020 sat under the old fixed 36-month rule and were not grandfathered into activity-based expiry. If you hold a very old balance, check the expiry line in your account before assuming it is safe.

How buying works with us

Tell us how many miles you need on WhatsApp. We quote, you pay, the miles land in your own Asia Miles account — usually within 24–72 hours. You book the award yourself, or if you would rather hand the whole job over, our award booking service sources the miles and issues the ticket as one price.

The honest part, because we put it on every page: buying miles breaches Asia Miles terms and conditions. It is a contractual matter rather than a criminal one in most jurisdictions, but Cathay can act on accounts and tickets it identifies. Our award ticket terms spell out the risk and back tickets with a 100% refund if an airline cancels before travel. If that risk does not sit right with you, do not buy — and we will say the same on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to buy Asia Miles?

From 1.75 cents per mile through AirMilesHK, with better rates at higher volumes. Miles are deposited directly into your own Asia Miles account, typically within 24 to 72 hours.

What are Asia Miles worth when redeemed?

Independent 2026 valuations put them at 1.2 to 1.3 cents each on average, but oneworld premium-cabin awards deliver 4 to 6 cents per mile. The gap is the whole strategy: buy at 1.75 cents, redeem business or first class worth far more.

Do Asia Miles expire?

Yes — 18 months after your last earning or redemption activity. Any activity resets the clock for the whole balance, including donating as little as 100 miles to Cathay's carbon offset programme. Miles earned before January 2020 aged out under the old fixed 36-month rule.

What is the best Asia Miles redemption?

Long-haul business class on Cathay's own flights — Hong Kong to London or Paris — and oneworld multi-carrier awards, which price round-the-world style itineraries on a fixed chart. Short-haul economy and the Cathay Shop are the weakest uses at under 1.5 cents per mile.

Are there fuel surcharges on Asia Miles awards?

Yes, and they matter. Cathay levies surcharges on its own award flights, and they have risen on long-haul routes in 2026. Partner awards on carriers like Qantas or American can carry lower surcharges — worth comparing before you book.

Is buying Asia Miles against Cathay's rules?

Buying miles breaches Asia Miles terms and conditions. It is a contractual matter rather than a criminal one in most jurisdictions, but Cathay can cancel tickets or audit accounts it identifies. We disclose this before every order, and our award ticket terms include a full refund if a ticket is cancelled before travel.
