What buying Asia Miles costs

- Oneworld multi-carrier awards. Four or more oneworld airlines strung into one itinerary on a fixed chart — the closest thing left to a round-the-world award at sane pricing.
- JAL business class to Tokyo — comparable value to Cathay's own metal and often easier award space.
The weak uses: short-haul economy (~1.5 cents), and the Cathay Shop catalogue (as low as 0.5 cents). If that is the plan, do not buy miles — pay cash for the flight.
The fuel surcharge trap
Cathay levies carrier surcharges on its own award flights, and they rose again on long-haul routes in 2026. A "free" business class award to London can carry hundreds of dollars in surcharges and taxes on top of the miles.
The partial fix: partner awards. Redemptions on carriers like Qantas or American through Asia Miles can carry materially lower surcharges. When we price an award for a customer, we quote the all-in figure — miles cost plus taxes and surcharges — because that is the only number that means anything.
The 18-month expiry rule
Asia Miles expire 18 months after your last earning or redemption activity. Any activity resets the clock for your entire balance — a card transfer, a redemption, even donating 100 miles to Cathay's carbon offset programme, which takes two minutes and protects everything.
One legacy catch: miles earned before January 2020 sat under the old fixed 36-month rule and were not grandfathered into activity-based expiry. If you hold a very old balance, check the expiry line in your account before assuming it is safe.
